Why I’m Not the Stepdad, I’m the Dad That Stepped Up

I’m not a stepdad. I’m the dad that stepped up.

I didn’t come into my kids’ lives until they were already well into their childhood. Their biological father was never really in the picture, and their mother was struggling to raise them on her own. I saw how much they were struggling, and I knew that I had to do something.

So I stepped up. I became a father figure to them, even though I wasn’t their biological father. I loved them, I supported them, and I raised them as my own.

I’m not the stepdad who comes in and tries to take over. I’m the dad who respects the role that their biological father played in their lives, and I’m the dad who builds on that foundation.

I’m the dad who is there for them through thick and thin. I’m the dad who is always there to listen, to offer advice, and to provide a shoulder to cry on.

I’m the dad who loves them unconditionally. I’m the dad who is proud of them, and I’m the dad who will always be there for them.

I’m not the stepdad. I’m the dad that stepped up.
