I Survived a Meeting That Should’ve Been an Email

I’ve been in the workforce for over a decade, and I’ve sat through my fair share of meetings. Some of them have been productive and informative, while others have been a complete waste of time. But the worst kind of meeting is the one that could have easily been an email.

You know the type of meeting I’m talking about. It’s the one where you all gather in a conference room, listen to someone drone on for an hour about something that could have been summarized in a few paragraphs. Or the one where you spend half the meeting arguing about something that could have been resolved with a simple phone call.

These meetings are a drain on productivity and morale. They’re also a waste of our time and our employer’s money. So why do we keep having them?

In this article, I’ll explore the reasons why meetings that should be emails happen, and I’ll offer some tips for how to avoid them. I’ll also share some of my own personal experiences with meetings that should have been emails, and I’ll explain why they were so frustrating.

Why I Survived a Meeting That Should’ve Been an Email

As a working professional, I’ve been in my fair share of meetings that could have easily been an email. In fact, I would argue that most meetings are unnecessary. But every now and then, I find myself in a meeting that I actually need to attend. And when that happens, I know that I have to survive.

Here are a few reasons why I survived a meeting that should’ve been an email:

  • I came prepared. I knew that this meeting was going to be a waste of time, so I made sure to come prepared. I had my notes, my questions, and my arguments ready to go. This way, I was able to make the most of my time and actually contribute something to the conversation.
  • I stayed focused. It was easy to get distracted during this meeting. There were people talking over each other, people checking their phones, and people just plain not paying attention. But I stayed focused on the task at hand and did my best to contribute to the discussion.
  • I was respectful. Even though I didn’t want to be in this meeting, I still respected the time of the other attendees. I listened to what they had to say, and I tried to be polite and professional.

In the end, I survived this meeting because I came prepared, stayed focused, and was respectful. I know that not all meetings can be avoided, but if you can follow these tips, you’ll be able to survive them too.

Bonus tip: If you really don’t want to be in a meeting, send an email to the organizer and ask if it can be turned into an email instead. Most of the time, they’ll be happy to oblige.

My Buying Guides on ‘I Survived A Meeting That Should’Ve Been An Email’

I’ve been in the workforce for over 10 years, and I’ve sat through my fair share of meetings that should’ve been emails. You know the type: a meeting to discuss a project that could’ve been communicated in a few bullet points, or a meeting to catch up on something that could’ve been handled over Slack.

These meetings are a waste of time for everyone involved. They’re often unproductive, and they can leave you feeling frustrated and drained. But there are ways to survive these meetings and come out on the other side unscathed.

In this buying guide, I’ll share my tips for surviving meetings that should’ve been emails. I’ll cover everything from how to prepare for the meeting to how to deal with difficult people. So if you’re tired of wasting your time in pointless meetings, read on for my advice.

How to Prepare for a Meeting That Should’ve Been an Email

The first step to surviving a meeting that should’ve been an email is to prepare. Here are a few things you can do to get ready:

  • Read the agenda. Make sure you know what the meeting is about and what’s expected of you.
  • Come up with some talking points. Even if you’re not expected to speak, it’s helpful to have a few things to say in case you’re asked a question.
  • Set a time limit. Don’t let the meeting go on for longer than it needs to. If the meeting is starting to drag, politely suggest that you wrap it up.

How to Deal with Difficult People in Meetings

Not all meetings are created equal. Sometimes, you’ll have to deal with difficult people. Here are a few tips for dealing with difficult people in meetings:

  • Stay calm. It’s easy to get frustrated when you’re dealing with a difficult person, but it’s important to stay calm and collected. If you lose your cool, you’ll only make the situation worse.
  • Set boundaries. Don’t let someone bully you into saying something you don’t agree with. If someone is trying to interrupt you, politely but firmly tell them that you’d like to finish your thought.
  • Be respectful. Even if you don’t agree with someone, it’s important to be respectful of their opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and you should never try to silence someone.

How to End a Meeting That Should’ve Been an Email

The best way to end a meeting that should’ve been an email is to make sure there’s a clear next step. Here are a few things you can do to wrap up the meeting:

  • Summarize the key points. Make sure everyone is on the same page about what was discussed and what the next steps are.
  • Assign tasks. If there are any tasks that need to be completed, make sure someone is responsible for each one.
  • Set a follow-up date. Schedule a follow-up meeting to make sure the next steps are being taken.

By following these tips, you can survive even the most pointless meetings. So next time you find yourself in a meeting that should’ve been an email, don’t despair. Just remember my advice, and you’ll be out of there in no time.
